The Social Media Interview: Caitlin from Wander Wonderfully

I am really excited for this post, as it is something I wish to bring in on a regular basis! We are all running our lives, businesses, blogs and social media - and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming! Sure, we can use social media automation tools, hire a social media manager, and do a bunch of little things that make our lives easier. We can also look to others to see how they make it work, which is exactly what this interview series is all about.

The Social Media Interview Series is where I will ask people from all around the world, whether they are business owners, bloggers, digital nomads or magicians, just how they make it work in this social media crazy world.

The first person out in this series is Caitlin from Wander Wonderfully! Originally from the US (Boston via Virginia), she has now lived all across the world! She's a tough one, and we can all find inspiration in her motto, which is 'Live, Travel, Bliss and don’t be sorry!'

In addition to sharing her adventures on her blog, you can also find Caitlin rocking it on both Instagram and Facebook.

Let's dive in!

The Social Media Interview - Caitlin from Wander Wonderfully

Hi Caitlin! Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to where you are today.

I have always had a passion for getting out there and exploring, and I did just that.  After graduating college and like most recent graduates, I felt lost and wasn’t sure what I wanted to ‘be’.  A year later, I decided to go back to school, but with a twist.  I’d move halfway across the world to Copenhagen, Denmark to pursue my Master’s degree at the University of Copenhagen.  I chose this program because it was to be completed over the course of 2-years.  I wanted to maximize my time abroad and also have the time to dedicate to my studies.  It was in Copenhagen where I met my (now husband) who took me to Australia after finishing my studies in Denmark.  After living on the Gold Coast for a little over a year, we decided to take our life abroad again, and live the expat life in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

We both were very lucky to secure amazing jobs with global companies, I now work in marketing and fill my days with all things client services.

Let's jump to social media! How has social media changed your life and business since its ‘dawn’?

Social media has really been a blessing for me and my global lifestyle.  It allows me to keep in touch with all my friends, as daily posting keeps everyone updated as to my daily excursions and experiences.   Without social, I know I wouldn’t have been able to keep the close relationship with my friends all over the world.

What do you do when social media and staying ‘online’ starts feeling like a chore?

It’s never a chore for me!  Social is a way for me to keep in touch, and show everyone my view of the world.  I feel like I have a responsibility to others to show them what else is out there, so for me, it’s never over done.  I enjoy taking photographs and am an avid photographer, so whether it is with my iPhone or my DSLR, I am always snapping away and enjoy posting about my adventure.  Storytelling is an art, which I enjoy.

What is your favourite social media platform? And why?

I love Instagram because it’s so visual. As a photographer, I tell my stories through images, and Instagram is a great platform to build and showcase my visual talents

Do you have a tip for aspiring bloggers/business owners when it comes to social media?

Just get started!  For a while I was very concerned about what to post, when to post, and if all my content needed to have the same sort of visual styling.  I found that this just set me back, and I ended up not posting at all!  Now I just let my creativity take me where it wants, whether I am featured in the photo or it’s a landscape shot.  I don’t fret over what to post and when to post anymore.

What social media achievement are you most proud of?

My blog – it took a while for me to set it up and get started, but now that I have I am really proud of it.  It is hard to find the time to post regularly, but when I do, it reminds me of all that I have achieved, and what it took to get to the place I am today!  I have so many stories to share and this wonderful platform to share it on!

What are your favourite social media tools?

I love photo editing apps.  When I don’t have my DSLR and can’t grab a great shot, I can always count on my iPhone with a little photo editing to get the job done.  VSCO, Snapseed, and Adobe Photoshop Fix are some of my favourite tools for on the go editing.  Recently, I discovered apps that help schedule posts and automate your posting schedule.  These are great for my clients, who have a lot of content to share and no time to do it!

What would you say is the biggest benefit of social media?

The ability to keep in touch with others, and grow your network.  I have met so many amazing people through Facebook groups, Instagram contests, and blog networks.  One of the main reasons I love to travel is because I get to meet and connect with others who I wouldn’t have the opportunity to in everyday circumstance. With social media, even though I work full time and travel every so often, I still feel like I get to be a global nomad and work with other cultures and people through my blog, or Instagram page.
